Student Leadership Council Development

Region One GEAR UP and its partners strongly believe that, although students are the target population, they are by no means empty vessels waiting to be filled. Region One has a strong commitment to tapping into the leadership potential of students, and to building student capacity to influence others. Therefore, Region One, with partner GEAR UP for Excellence (GUFE) works with student leaders through the Youth Advisory Council, along with GEAR UP campus facilitators to build student capacity to be advocates and guides for their peers and parents in the area of college access pathways.

Students and campus facilitators participate in ongoing, intensive development with Region One and GUFE.  GUFE delivers high-impact training to GEAR UP youth training to prepare today’s GEAR UP youth for an increasingly competitive and ever-changing global environment.

In the process of developing the student’s capacity and building leadership qualities, Region One works closely with partner school districts to establish a Youth Leadership Council (YLC) at each partner school district. After training, YLC members are charged with the task of creating a college-going environment at their respective campuses. They coordinate college access and career fairs; create bulletin boards; promote tutoring; make announcements regarding pre-college institutes; present information on college-related topics at the College for All Conferences; and provide input on student issues to administrators.
