School Systems Set to Launch Teacher Residency Programs, Strengthening Educator Pipelines

Five area school systems are launching teacher residency programs designed to develop future educators within their districts. Donna ISD, Edinburg CISD,  McAllen ISD, Mission CISD and Point Isabel ISD will implement a “fast track” residency model that places aspiring teachers on campuses in August for a full year of hands-on clinical training.

Shaping Culture Through Leadership: San Benito CISD Principal Reflects On His First Semester

San Benito CISD Principal Daniel Garcia described his path to leadership as one shaped by experience across nearly every corner of a school campus. Now in his 16th year in education, the Berta Cabaza Middle School principal began his career as a science teacher, later serving as a coach, elementary counselor, high school counselor and assistant principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Students to Gain Expanded Early College Opportunities Through New College Pathways Initiative

A new investment from Greater Texas Foundation will open doors to college for students in deep South Texas through the new Kickstart College-Ready program. The initiative is a collaboration between the Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA) and Region One Education Service Center (Region One) associate degree pathways.

Mercedes ISD Celebrates First Cohort of Teacher Residents

Mercedes ISD recognized its inaugural cohort of teacher residents during a ceremony on December 16, 2025, at Ruben Hinojosa Elementary School. Elementary students and mentor teachers expressed their pride and gratitude as seven University of Texas Rio Grande Valley College of Education and P-16 Integration graduates were celebrated for completing a yearlong, paid residency program built on hands-on classroom experience.
