RECESS Initiative

Region One ESC is pleased to sponsor the RECESS grant, an initiative of the Texas Education Agency's Early Learners Succeed Project. In 2019-2020, the first year of this initiative, Region One was partnered with Hidalgo ISD to provide a series of professional learning offerings including workshops and instructional coaching/mentoring to educators and parents of early childhood classrooms. Currently, all Region One ESC area districts/charter schools, Head Start and Learning Centers are able to receive RECESS services we offer services free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
Additional supports include:
- literacy development
- family engagement
- access to books
- expanded learning
Our RECESS Specialist is working closely with cohorts of literacy coaches, school and district administrators, and parents to expand RECESS to more sites. (Learn more: https://www.esc1.net/Page/5922)
Participants receive guidance on use of structured literacy sessions conducted by classroom teachers, parent liaisons, and parents as co-facilitators. Partnerships with Scholastic, Lakeshore Learning, the Region One ESC Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning, and community organizations were developed to deliver services and resources for participants.
