Region One ESC provides Assistive Technology services through the Special Education Department. The support includes use of devices, training, technical assistance, and conference sessions all geared toward assuring students and teachers are able to access and appropriately use assistive technologies to help them learn and achieve at high levels.
Assistive Technology Services and Devices Defined
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, P.L. 105-17) defines an Assistive Technology as any service that directly assists an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device [20 U.S.C. Chapter 33, Section 1401 (25)].
According to IDEA, an assistive technology device is any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
