Superintendent & School Board Resources

First-time Superintendents are required by the Texas Administrative Code to complete a professional development and mentorship program. To satisfy this requirement, Region One Education Service Center has developed a First-Time Superintendents’ Academy and Mentorship Program.

The Academy provides the opportunity to meet the required 36 professional development hours through seven scheduled modules of training. These modules are designed in blocks of 6 to 8 hours per session and directly relate to the duties and responsibilities of a superintendent. Most importantly, our academy provides the opportunity to develop professional relationships and networks of resource.

Relevant topics such as: Superintendent/ Board Relations, Governance, Contracts, Instructional Leadership, Technology, Assessment & Evaluation, Communication, and other applicable topics. Held in our region utilizing the expertise of local educational leaders, the Academy provides in-depth discussions on familiar issues and those important to the region.

One of the biggest responsibilities of a School Board by Texas law is to evaluate the performance of the Superintendent.  This appraisal is more than a one year annual obligation, it should be thought of as the culmination of a yearlong cycle.  Region One offers guidance, samples and action steps to move this process forward as part of the district’s strategic planning. 

RAC is comprised of public school Superintendents and Charter School Superintendents/CEOS. RAC Plays a critical role in providing direction to the ESC in the development and delivery of products, services and support, which fulfills the ESC's role in providing assistance to public school institutions to improve student performance, operate more efficiently and effectively, and carry out mandates by the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Legislature. 

As trustees of their independent school districts school board members are required, as per Texas Education Code (Section 11.159) to attend continuing education training. The Region One Education Service Center offers three levels of board training to fulfill this requirement. The continuing education requirement applies to each member of an independent school district board of trustees and consists of orientation sessions, an annual team building session with the local board and the superintendent, and specified hours of continuing education based on identified needs.
