School Safety

Provides resources for school systems to complete an Active Threat Annex to their Basic Plan, which addresses actions and responsibility through the five phases of Emergency Management, including an Active Threat Annex template and completion guide.

The participant will know and understand the legal requirement regarding the

• appropriate equipment requirement;
• appropriate procedures that must be followed to safeguard the lives of pedestrians
• inappropriate hand gestures to control traffic;
• appropriate attire; 
• legal ramifications for the safe crossing of pedestrians (negligence).

Assists school systems with the implementation of an Emergency Operations Plans (EOP) following the model available by the Texas School Safety Center. A thorough review of the EOP plans and Supportive Annex’s are addressed.

Recognizing that schools are not immune to natural and man-made hazards, do your schools have emergency plans in place for the safety and well- being of students and staff? What is your role? The specific type of emergency will guide where and what type of safety plan will be provided. Emergencies

can happen with or without warning. Being prepared physically and psychologically to handle unexpected accidents or disasters is an individual as well as an organizational responsibility.

The participant will know and understand their role in the transport of a child with special needs that requires various mobility aids such as restraining harnesses, properly tied down wheelchairs, proper use of the lift, how to conduct an emergency evacuation, proper use of seat belt cutters, fire blankets, and transfer boards.

This on-site training evaluates the workflow and focuses on the use of basic Microsoft Office (word, excel, outlook, etc.) in order to automate collection, retrieval and use of data more effectively & efficiently.

Region One assists school systems with Safety and Security Audits of their campuses and non- instructional facilities, as mandated by the Texas Education Code §37.108 This mandated audit is to take place every three years for school systems and education service centers.

The Safety Audit process consists of an intruder assessment, safety climate surveys and interviews before the initial audit, a thorough use and implementation of the Texas School Safety Center Safety Audit Checklist, and recommendations by the Region One auditing team.

“At least once every three years, each public junior college district shall conduct a safety and security audit of the district facilities. To the extent possible, a district shall follow safety and security audit procedures developed by the Texas School Safety Center or a comparable public or private entity.”

The Texas Education Code §37.108 

The Texas Legislature has enacted laws addressing requirements relating to school safety and security. Educators, community partners, and parents should be aware of these mandates, not only to ensure state compliance, but also to establish effective school safety practices in their respective districts.

The participant will learn the components of discipline management, identify the three commitments necessary to making good judgments regarding student behavior, and observe student behavior to identify the appropriate intervention that the behavior requires.

Digital Threat Assessment (DTA) was developed to address the evolving technology challenges that currently face our schools. These challenges have entered the educational domain with force and overwhelmed school district staff. Most aspects
of school safety and threats now involve a social media or other online component and it is important to be prepared so that school systems respond appropriately. The goal of the threat assessment is to prevent unwanted outcomes from occurring.
