Social Studies

In this session participants will analyze and deconstruct the revised 2024-2025 TEKS, review Texas Education Agency documents, engage in elements of effective instructional practices to positively impact student achievement and plan for the implications on curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Participants will experience components of strong instructional practices (Knowledge Coherence, Evidence Based Responses, Multiple Perspectives, and Text Complexity) in Social Studies with a focus on historical eras. Sessions are available for K-5, MS and HS.

Teachers will engage in effective social studies practices that integrate literacy skills for improved student outcomes. Topics addressed include: reading and writing strategies and vocabulary building.

In this session, teachers will engage in literacy activities aligned to the 3rd-5th grade science and social studies TEKS, as well as learn strategies for reading cross-curricular passages and writing short constructed responses in science and social studies.

Participants will engage in a collaboration between the two disciplines to better prepare students for STAAR and End of Course Assessments. Topics include Teaching for Transfer of Learning, Integrating Cross-Curricular Passages, and Strategies for Response to Text and Student Writing. Available for grades 6 - 12.

Participants will engage in activities that incorporate critical thinking, collaboration, writing and fun! Teachers will leave the session better prepared for STAAR review with ready made reproducibles and activities for both in person and online learning. (Grade 8 and US History)

In this interactive hands on social studies student academy, students will engage innovative and engaging STAAR review strategies targeted to critical student expectations that support the needs of all learners.

Educators will learn to incorporate the use of foundational language, civil discourse, governmental and democratic processes to support the understanding of civic knowledge and skills. In addition, social studies educators will learn instructional routines that support all students in formulating and communicating visually, orally and in writing on social studies topics. Participants will experience components of strong social studies instructional practices including building Knowledge Coherence, utilizing Evidence Based Responses, incorporating Multiple Perspectives, and Text Complexity to utilize within their classrooms.
