Region One ESC celebrates National GEAR UP Week 2023

The Region One Education Service Center (ESC) is celebrating National GEAR UP week, starting Sept 25. This week commemorates the continuing success of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), a college access program providing students and families the support and resources they need for college success.

Since its inception in 1999, GEAR UP has improved educational outcomes for millions of low-income, minority and disadvantaged students across the United States, including over 18,000 students currently served by Region One’s three GEAR UP projects: College Now-Career Connected!, College Ready, Career Set! and Pathways to the Future!

Region One GEAR UP will celebrate National GEAR UP Week 2023 by hosting a family engagement kickoff on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at the Region One ESC Conference Center in Edinburg. The event will promote college and career readiness among GEAR UP families through activities and informational presentations.

“To me, GEAR UP means opportunity,” said Mary Grace Garcia, an incoming senior at Grulla High School. “Through GEAR UP, I have become more fearless when I experience obstacles and challenges.”

Since first acquiring the grant in 1999, Region One GEAR UP has served about 45,000 students.

“GEAR UP has empowered students to develop skills that promote success in college, career and life,” said Nicole Saenz, Region One ESC College, Ready Career Set! director. “Together with families and educators, we are excited to work together and unlock student potential for a brighter future.”
