Region One ESC Announces Board Election

The Region One Education Service Center will hold an election for two places on the Region One ESC Board of Directors which will expire on May 31, 2020. The two seats up for election are Place 2 representing Jim Hogg, Starr, and Zapata Counties, currently filled by Mr. Ricardo Gutierrez, of Rio Grande City, Texas, and Place 5 representing Cameron County, currently filled by Mr. Ruben Cortez, Jr., of Brownsville, Texas.

 

Mr. Gutierrez has held his Place 2 seat since 2010 when he was first appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mr. Noe R. Sanchez. He won his subsequent election in 2011. Mr. Cortez was first elected to the Board in June 2011.  Board members are elected to a three (3) year term by school board members of the 38 school districts within Region One.

Applications for ballot places may be obtained at the Region One ESC Executive Director’s Office, 1900 West Schunior, Edinburg, Texas, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. beginning Tuesday, February 4, 2020. Notice of filing must be at the headquarters office in person or by certified mail no later than 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2020.     

Any citizen of the United States who is at least 18 years of age, a resident in the county area represented by the seat, who is not engaged professionally in education or who is not a member of a school district board of trustees, a county board of trustees, or a board of an institution of higher education, may be elected to the Board of Directors membership.
